Silence is golden for charity
CHILDREN at a Warminster primary school have raised more then £1,000 by taking part in a sponsored silence.
All 216 pupils at the Minster Primary School took part in the Big Hush, joining thousands across the country to raise funds for Macmillen Cancer Support. They handed the money over to Macmillan on March 19. Last year the Big Hush raised more than £320,000 nationally after 888 schools and groups from across the UK participated.
The grand total raised by Minster pupils this year was £1,098.10. The children had to be silent for longer periods the older they were.
The oldest pupils in Year 6 had to keep their lips sealed for 45 minutes, with the four-year-olds in reception keeping quiet for just five minutes.
The school decided to become involved after several incidences of cancer affecting people within the school community.
Headteacher Sue Worringham was delighted with their achievements.
She said: "I think the children did fantastically well as it's a difficult thing for young children to do."
