Bangladeshi plan win support
PLANS for a Bangladesh Community Centre to move into a former hairdressing salon in Melksham have won support.
The proposal to move into 9 King Street received the unanimous support of Melksham Town Council's planning committee on Monday evening.
The plans will now go to the district council for final approval.

Will the funding proposals be released or will it be confirmed that no public cash is going into this project, based on the fact it is for one ethnic group and goes against inclusive social cohesion which should be promoted, but seems only to apply to white middle class and working class people who would not be allowed to have a white community centre! If public money is being used councillors may face problems with re-election as the public are tired of paying for things they are unable to use / excluded from / discriminated against due to being part of the indigenous population.

Planning decisions are not taken on who makes the applicaion so an applicaion would be accepted if there are no planning objections.
This neither implies support for, nor objection to, the particular individual or group ownership. It is just the way it is reported that politicises it.

Who says anyone is going to be excluded? Discriminated against? A planning application was submitted and accepted by the Town council on merit. It is not part of the planning application process to discuss how a project is being funded.

I think you will find you can get a list of grant funded organisations from the town hall. That may tell you.

Sadly, the above posts may appear true and I fully understand the sentiments. However, I also understand that, there have to be actual planning objections to an application for councillors to object.

I see nothing in any of the articles to suggest that anyone other than the Bangladeshi Community Centre itself is going to fund this initiative. I have seen nothing to suggest that anyone will be excluded. I have however, read some narrow minded, unpleasant and ill-informed comments

The concerns are real and neither narrow minded nor unpleasant but maybe misdirected. I have seen no eveidence of funding from public sources in this instance but knowing the track record for public funding of ethnic minority facilities, which could be seen as discriminatory, valid concerns are aired in this thread with reasonable justification.

Read the papers and watch more news on the telly....all the proof you need is in there! if other melksham and other races were welcome why has it not been advertised as such instead of Melksham Bangladeshi centre instead of Melksham "community" center??

Actually if any nationality or religion - English, Welsh, Irish, African, Caribbean, Asian,Indian or Catholic, Jewish, Hindu - or any other wanted to set up a community centre to celebrate their culture, meet with like minded people, I would be very supportive - as long as they don't exclude others from joining, visiting, sharing.

If you read my postings, Jethro, you will see that I have taken a balanced view on funding, making no accusations or claims on funding for this particular poject. I simply stated that we don't know about the funding but there are precedents for Webbos suspicions. That hardly places me as a member of the BNP or any other political party.
