Police van boost for town
 |
| Mayor of Westbury Coun Charlie Finbow with PCSO Matt Stewart with the new community police van |
WESTBURY will be benefiting from a new multi-purpose police van thanks to a partnership between Wiltshire Police, Westbury Town Council and Rygor Commercials.
The three organisations have teamed up to provide the funding for the £14,000 Mercedes Vito, with £7,000 coming from the town council and £7,000 being split between Wiltshire Police and Rygor.
Westbury's neighbourhood team will be using the van, which has been specially modified to reduce crime and disorder by Rygor Commercials in West Wiltshire trading estate.
Wiltshire police fleet manager Steve Botham said: "It is the first dedicated vehicle that has been sponsored by a town council in Wiltshire, excluding Swindon. The vehicle will supplement the closure of the Westbury inquiry office and has been ring fenced for Westbury so it can't be moved.
"It's a high visibility vehicle so there's a reassurance to the people of Westbury that they have a dedicated resource."
Rygor truck sales manager Bill Kingsmill said: "We've supplied vehicles to Wiltshire police for numerous years now. It's nice to put something back into the community.
"The van is specifically designed for neighbourhood policing. It has an extra row of seats and table if a statement is needed to be taken."

Whilst all 3 parties involved are to be congratulated for their part in supplying this to Westbury it really is a sad way this country is going when a van replaces a Police station

Whats the point of getting more vans if there's no coppers to drive them. By a Policeman instead!

During the latest Westbury Town Council meeting on 3rd March, our local community beat officer claimed that Westbury now has a full team of police and PCSOs on hand.
I believe the new van can be driven by Police Officers or PCSOs, so it is going to be very useful.
In my role as the representative for Westbury Town Council to the Westbury Youth Services Committee (an advisory committee at the youth centre), I attended a meeting at the youth centre (the "youthie") on Monday this week with a good number of young people to discuss issues that they wanted to raise.
I was interested to learn their views about local Police Officers and PCSOs.
It seems that the young people are very appreciative of the PCSOs ... whom, it seems, spend much of their time walking around Westbury meeting our young people who are gathering in our public places .... even though it often falls to the PCSOs to gently move the young people on to other places if necessary ...
It is the PCSOs who actually know what is going on these days at street level ... and the van can only help this process.

how many officers actually police westbury at any time night and day ?how many police officers with the power to arrest?how many PCSOs (mini cops)?all wiltshire towns need real cops and stations that are manned and open regardless of what they drive ...

Westbury Town Council must have far too much money to throw around.

PCSO's are lego police. Even the government agreed the pcso was a failed experiment. get real police on the road and in the towns.

According to the web, the county has an Established Strength of 1193 Officers. Assume that at any one time, 100 are sick, on leave or on training courses. Then three shifts. Take away those on office jobs, and if you have 300 officers actually available for duties "on the street" in the whole county, you'd be lucky.

Hmmmm.
Sally's comment made me think about the last time I was in a pub.
It was before Christmas Day.
Actually, I've never been legless in my life .... though maybe a bit wobbly a few times long ago.+

From all accounts the last time Russell bought a round, it cost half-a-crown a pint.

Walter
My change on that occasion, including a three-penny bit and sixpence are mounted on a card in celebration of the event .... according to so-called friends who presented the little commemoration to me in 1995.

I see Sally's comments have been removed now.
It was not me who complained as I don't bother anymore on the basis that moronic comments reflect on the writer - not me.

Shame they don't apply the same standards to their own scribblings!

Oh, sanitising definitely takes place. Articles headed "See Comments (12)" etc suddenly have none. Others have no place for comment, such as the recent sentencing of that evil little rat Gunning who killed his cousin driving his drugs-paid Jaguar into a roundabout whilst drunk and with drug traces. Remember at the time of the accident how the howls of protest greeted any comment? Turns out the "loveable rogue" (WT) he killed had convicitons for theft and fraud.

Summer will soon be upon us the red carpets will be out and brolly boy will be called upon to perform his duties. I wonder what Vips he will be sucking up to this summer. mmm

In my view, the Police Authority should budget and pay for all police resources without going cap in hand to local councils with a sob-story that the council and local people need to stump up money for extra Police facilities or the town won't get it.
The Police Authority is a council tax precepting authority just like councils and the Fire Brigade.
Actually, I regard this sort of behaviour as blackmail on the part of senior officers involved with setting the budget.
I don't blame the poor sods who have to manage the problem and carry out instructions to pay visits to councils asking for money.
I actually voted against putting up town council money for our first PCSO after the local Inspector had come cap in hand saying we had to pay or we would not get one.
As Rygor were also involved in this particular scheme, I did not feel inclined to rock the boat this time around so I actually did vote to support the budget which included this project. The new town council budget was passed unanimously.
