Fly-tip crackdown catches offenders
A CRACKDOWN by MOD Police on fly-tipping on Salisbury Plain has resulted in two more successful prosecutions.
Officers have been targeting people who have been abusing public access to MOD property to dump their unwanted rubbish.
The latest prosecutions were made after bags of household rubbish were found dumped on land which is part of the Army training area.
A 22-year-old man was fined £500 at Salisbury Magistrates Court last week after pleading guilty to an offence under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act.
And a 33-year-old man was also recently fined £500 at the same court for dumping bin bags of rubbish at Tottenham Wood. He also pleaded guilty.
Sergeant Mark Venning, of MOD Police, said: "This training area land is used for Army exercises but the MOD also recognises there are rights of way the public can enjoy.
"So it is a shame that a small number of persistent perpetrators are abusing that opportunity to dump rubbish and spoil the enjoyment of the environment for everyone.
"These two offenders could easily have avoided their fines by taking their household waste to a local authority refuse site but their laziness ended up costing them a significant sum.
"Their prosecutions should act as a warning to other potential offenders that we are alert to such activities and will use all the means at our disposal to ensure that any illegal activity will not go unpunished."

They could indeed and they could also wipe the councils a r s e for them as well while they are at it. It defeats all purposes of greeness if we have to drive miles to deliver our rubbish to a dump. What on earth are we paying council tax for when there is next to no rubbish collections?

When I were a soldier in Garmany, they had "bulk rubbish" days once a month when you could put out anything from old sofas to fridges. You had to put them out the night before, so once the Poles and Turks had taken anything worth having, there weren't much left for the council to take away!

We can all sleep easier now that we know that the full force of the law is looking out for fly tippers - burglars, vandals, drink drivers et al must be laughing their socks off

I'm surprised at peoples negativity regarding this story. If we all just dumped our rubbish where we felt like it the countryside around our beautiful area would be ruined very quickly! I for one am very pleased to know that inconsiderate morons who dump all their cra-p are being punished, long may it continue.

Lets face most of these "fly-tippers" are just lazy b'stards,
too idle to wait until the tip opens, or to pay for disposal of their rubbish.
It our countryside they are ruining, so yes, let us hammer them with large fines !

Why didn't these 2 people just use the Skips in Warminster; surely it's a lot nearer than going all the way up to the plain and having to find somewhere out of the way to dump their rubbish?

Agree with Daz n Colin, hit them harder with meaningful fines. We speed coz it costs peanuts to get a ticket. Make speeding a £1000 on the spot and you can bet that there'll be less of it (less revenue too....)

Alf, anybody who dumps rubbish is probably not over endowed with a rational thought process;
YetiJ - in France, the police enforce on the spot speeding fines, especially in built up areas, and everybody obeys the limits - £1000 fines here might just curb the aggressive driving so common on our roads

People from the Romsey area have been calling on residents of plains villages offering to remove bulk items for a fee of around £100. They remove them and have promptly dumped them on the plain near Everleigh. When they were found out and told to remove what they had dumped they then decided to burn it on site but were again spotted. Householders should check the ID of anyone offering this service to see whether they are genuine and reputable. If the rubbish is dumped and it is found to be yours you are still legally responsible for it. It costs the MoD huge sums to remove rubbish each year and I'm sure all will agree that the MoD's budget would be better spent on providing those serving overseas with proper kit.

The money would be far better spent on fares to bring our service personel home from these illegal wars.
